World Antimicrobial Awareness Week

18 November 2022

RCVS Knowledge welcomes World Antimicrobial Awareness Week activities and the collaborative efforts of the veterinary industry in tackling antimicrobial resistance.

Antimicrobial resistance is one of the biggest global health issues of our time.

Antibiotics are essential to treat many conditions in both humans and veterinary medicine. But they must be used carefully, to ensure they are effective when our patients really need them.

Not used responsibly, antibiotics can cause patients dangerous side effects, delay an accurate diagnosis, and contribute to antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

Inappropriate disposal of unused antibiotics also damages the environment, affecting water quality and wildlife.

Our free, evidence-based resources help veterinary professionals improve their antimicrobial stewardship and increase knowledge about responsible antimicrobial use.

On our AMR Hub, you will find freely accessible, evidence-based knowledge and resources about responsible antimicrobial use.

Farm vets can become Farm Vet Champions to access free CPD and set SMART goals, to help improve their antimicrobial use.

We also have Antimicrobial Stewardship Awards, for farm, equine and small animal vets and teams who are championing antimicrobial stewardship.
