Hear how the first Quality Improvement in a Day event helped teams build their QI confidence
18 March 2024
Ahead of our next Quality Improvement (QI) in a Day event, we caught up with some of our delegates from our December session to hear about what they learnt to take into their practice. Read how they were inspired and why you won’t want to miss out on our next event.
This one-day, in-person event, taking place this April, features sessions by expert speakers Pam Mosedale, Lou Northway, and Kathrine Blackie. It provides practical steps to give you confidence to apply QI in practice. Delegates are also invited to an additional, free, follow-up virtual workshop to support you when you take your learning back to practice.
Anne-Marie Carr, Veterinary Surgeon at Millburn Veterinary Practice in Coleraine, Northern Ireland
I’d been challenged with rolling out QI in the practices in our area and was looking for a way of involving everyone in the team, and get some ideas of how that could be done.
There was a diversity of people there, from clinical directors to stand-alone practices, to a vet who was solely involved with the pharmacy in group practices. I found it really useful to get to chat with other delegates and learn what they were doing. I got lots of tips on how to involve everyone because it’s a difficult concept to onboard all team members.
The other thing which I thought was fabulous was the follow-up meeting. Having had an intensive day it was great to just go and chat with people about what they’d done, and I learnt so much. With the follow-up meeting, all the things we had to do started to fall into place.
Huw Morgan-Jones, Practice Owner and Veterinary Surgeon at Vets4Pets Milton Keynes & Bletchley
I loved the fact that QI focusses on helping us run our practices in a very collaborative way with all our team members. So often training is centred on one group of the practice team, but by its nature this work is very inclusive.
Going to the training helped me to understand how the difficulties and challenges that we can face at work can be looked at as opportunities for us and our teams to grow and develop.
I also liked that the three speakers had slightly different perspectives, and by doing this they all managed to get the theory of QI and its practical side into one day.
I enjoyed the introduction of some fun elements into the day, this was a good idea.
Whilst the RCVS Knowledge site is really excellent, this CPD complements it and really brings it alive. I'd recommend this course to anyone with an interest in Quality Improvement in their practice.
We are sending more of our team to the training soon because I found it so helpful and I really would like the whole practice team to get behind it.
Jacqueline Hepworth-Harvey, Nursing Manager at Oakmount Veterinary Hospital in Burnley
I thoroughly enjoyed the day and learnt quite a lot. It has helped me to think more about audits within practice not only for me personally, and learn how to involve the whole team and make them aware that there is so much support out there. It doesn't have to be complicated. Also, it doesn't have to be clinical.
The checklist discussion was the most important one for me and it has set me off designing checklists for our practice. I used the templates RCVS Knowledge provided for ideas and then tweaked it to make it more usable for our practice and am planning on doing separate ones now for specific cases too.
The course and speakers are engaging with lots of open discussion and encouragement, and I would definitely recommend it to every practice so we can all strive towards high quality practice.
QI in a Day is open to all members of the veterinary practice team and is especially beneficial to those taking part in the RCVS Practice Standards Scheme (PSS). The event covers Clinical Audit and Significant Event Audits, which all practices need to show evidence of complying with according to the scheme’s 2022 update. It also covers practical steps to improve team communication, how to respond when things in practice don’t go to plan, patient safety, and more.
The event is followed by a free virtual workshop – open only to those who attend QI in a Day – for the group to work together, with the RCVS Knowledge team, to troubleshoot and share ideas for implementing the lessons into your practice.
Get your tickets for QI in a Day on Thursday 18th April at the Forest Centre, Bedford.
