In this award-winning case example, the team at Animal Trust Dewsbury reduced their use of highest-priority, critically important antibiotics (HPCIAs) and ensured that any use followed the principles of good antimicrobial stewardship. Changes were incrementally introduced to prioritise culture and sensitivity testing as a guide to antimicrobial prescribing, along with the introduction of new stock control measures, and a requirement for there to be a specific indication for use of a long-acting antibiotic. By the end of the project, the prescription rates for HPCIAs fell from 3% to just 0.46% of all consultations.
