New Pro Vice-Chancellor announced at University of Bristol

RCVS Council Member Avril Waterman-Pearson has been announced as the new Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of Bristol.

Avril Waterman-Pearson, Professor of Veterinary Anaesthesia (pictured right), is to succeed Professor Patricia Broadfoot as Pro Vice-Chancellor, subject to ratification by University Council in May.

Professor Waterman-Pearson gained both her first degree and her doctorate at Bristol, and has spent most of her career at the University. Her principal academic interests are anaesthesia and analgesia in all species.

She was promoted to a personal professorship at Bristol in 1997 and has served two terms as Head of Clinical Veterinary Science. She is also a Fellow of the RCVS and a recipient of the Livesey medal.

Professor Waterman-Pearson said: "I care deeply for the University; it not only educated me but it has paid me to do a job that I love for over 25 years. I am proud to have been given the opportunity to serve the University as Pro Vice-Chancellor and I look forward, with enthusiasm, to repaying the faith that has been placed in me."

Professor Eric Thomas, Vice-Chancellor, said: "Avril's academic career is highly distinguished. She is also an outstanding leader and thoroughly committed to this University and its future."

Professor Broadfoot is leaving to take up the post of Vice-Chancellor of the University of Gloucestershire in September 2006.
