  • 08:30-09:00 How good are you and can you prove it? - Chris Gush

Chris Gush shares his NHS background to show why continuous quality improvement is crucial for animal health and welfare and for every member of the veterinary team. He will discuss practice tools so veterinary teams can begin to unlock the benefits of quality improvement.

  • 09:10-10:10 How to apply best evidence to manage and care for epilepsy patients in daily clinical practice - Holger Volk and Paul Pollard

Holger Volk and Paul Pollard evaluate the evidence base and discuss how to apply this to patients with idiopathic epilepsy. Current, first-line treatments and the evidence of combination therapy will be discussed.

  • 11:05-11:50 Research into small animal practice: why evidence matters - Peter Denys Cockcroft
Up-to-date, evidence-based knowledge is important when it comes to providing the best treatment to improve patient care and welfare. Peter Denys Cockcroft will introduce a free resource currently available for busy veterinary teams in practice, which aims to improve patient outcomes by supporting decision-making at the point of care.

  • 12:00-12:45 Learning from a rabbit anaesthetic death: implementing an evidence-based approach to rabbit anaesthesia in a practice setting - Molly Varga and Pam Mosedale

Using a real case study, Molly Varga and Pam Mosedale explain how, after an anaesthetic death, a practice analysed what happened to find the root cause of the mortality and how they improved to avoid making the same mistake.

  • 14:05-15:45 First do no harm: how systems can reduce the rate of morbidity and mortality by 50% - Richard Killen, Laura Playforth, and Richard Byrne

Each speaker will discuss practical examples of what improvements have been made within different practice settings and demonstrate how these have benefited patient care. There will be open discussion and sharing of existing resources that can help you apply process changes in your practice to drive meaningful improvements.

  • 16:50-17:35 Reliable care in the NHS: building safer systems in a just culture - Margaret Mary Devaney

A learning system is characterised by its ability to self-reflect and identify strengths and defects in both real-time and review intervals. Margaret Mary Devaney discusses the requirements of a healthy learning system within the NHS, its importance and how to apply those values to every decision.
