RCVS appoints new Postgraduate Dean to support PDP

29 August 2008

The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons has appointed a new Postgraduate Dean to support recent graduates as they complete their Professional Development Phase (PDP).

The PDP is designed to help new graduates put theory into practice by encouraging them to record and reflect on their experiences via an online, password-protected database. It also allows them to benchmark their progress against their graduate cohort.

Julian Wells (pictured) will join the team of two Postgraduate Deans – Professor David Noakes and Stephen Ware – to help graduates as they progress through the PDP, offering email support and monitoring completion.

A Shropshire-based practitioner, Julian is a former President of the British Small Animal Veterinary Association and was part of the original team that developed the PDP, mentoring new graduates through the pilot phase.

“We are delighted to expand our team of Postgraduate Deans with the addition of Julian,” comments RCVS Head of Education, Freda Andrews.

“As a veterinary surgeon who has established and built up his own practice, which is Investors in People accredited, Julian understands the importance of supporting assistants during their formative years,” she added.

The PDP was made compulsory for all new graduates from 2007 and an encouraging number of this year’s batch of graduates have already signed up. To view a demo, visit the PDP website  and click on ‘preview’.

New graduates wishing to join should mailto:[email protected] for a password.
