Practitioner toolkits now available

3 March 2015

We have launched two online toolkits which aim to give practitioners step-by-step support to develop their evidence-based approach to practice.

Vet in front of computer screenThe EBVM Toolkit is designed to help practitioners answer a clinical question with the best available evidence, says our Head of Library and Information Services, Clare Boulton.

She says: “The EBVM Toolkit is a guide to the first three steps of EBVM: asking an answerable question, finding the best evidence to answer it, and critically appraising that evidence. We’ve included templates and examples from ‘real-life’ veterinary cases, so that it’s applicable to daily practice.

She adds: “We hope that practitioners who use the EBVM Toolkit will summarise their findings in a Knowledge Summary, so that the answer will be easily accessible for the next person who asks that question.”

The second toolkit is a step-by-step guide to clinical audit, a process which helps practices review their own evidence and act on the results to maintain and improve standards of care.

We produced the Clinical Audit Toolkit with Pam Mosedale, a veterinary surgeon and member of the RCVS Practice Standards Group. The Group coordinates the Practice Standards Scheme, a voluntary initiative which accredits veterinary practices in the UK and aims to promote and maintain the highest standards of veterinary care.

She says: “Clinical audit is a way for practices to find out what’s working and what could be improved on. It gives practices and individuals the ability to monitor the quality of care given.”
